This will enable us to place each student in the correct level to learn English at the start of their course. Progress in learning English is monitored by continuous assessment from the English language teacher, tutorials and internal tests. International House Newcastle teaches through the communicative method and particular emphasis is placed on enabling the student to communicate effectively in English. All International House Newcastle teachers are fully qualified teachers of the English language and most have many years of experience inb many parts of the world. All English language students will receive a weekly work plan from their teachers and personal tutorials will take place on a regular basis. Course materials will be provided for all students, including a study pack and vocabulary book.

Tailor made programmes are designed to suit a student's particular learning needs and learning style. Experienced teachers will direct the student and monitor progress. 1:1 tutorials will take place at least once a week. There is a maximum of 12 students per class. Students are encouraged to develop learner autonomy. Students can use computer based material or text based materials. Students can develop listening and speaking skills. Students can work on web-based projects or projects based outside the classroom, such as questionnaires,opinion polls etc. A range of ESL material is available, for example, Aeronautical English, English for Medicine, English for Accountancy etc. Students can work at their own pace. An electronic record of the material covered is kept and produced at the end of a student's course. Personal Study Programme teachers liase with class teachers to produce the most effective programme for each student.

Improve English language writing skills for formal letters. e-mails, memos etc. Improve oral communication skills, both face-to-face and on the telephone. These courses can lead to the TOEIC examination. International House is a registered centre for TOEIC .TOEIC examinations take place on the final Friday of every month. Placement Fee: None International House English language school arranges half board, full board and self catering homestay accommodation most within 20 minutes travel time of the school.Students have single or double (if requested) study/bedrooms and they never share homestay accommodation with students of the same nationality unless this has been requested. Homestay accommodation is regularly checked by our accommodation officer who ensures that we meet the standard required by the British Council, International House World Organisation and EAQUALS. Living with a host family will give you a good introduction to life in the UK. (A host family is not always two parents and children: many hosts are couples or single people without children.)

Placement Fee: None International House can arrange self-catering accommodation in Charlotte House (see right). Each centrally heated apartment has 3-6 bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and two bathrooms as shared facilities. Outside office hours there is a resident post- graduate student who can assist with any emergencies. Charlotte House is in the centre of the city, close to International House, Newcastle College and both universities. The accommodation is secure and safe, as well as quiet and a perfect place to study. Each bedroom has a bed, shelves, wardrobe with mirror, table, chair and desk lamp, and is carpeted and curtained. The apartments have wireless broadband internet access and a telephone line, which can be connected at very low cost. There is also a pay phone on site. The bath/ shower rooms have all been newly refurbished as well as the lounge and kitchens. Bedding, crockery and cutlery is provided for all International House students and is included in the rent. The rent includes electricity heating and water, as well as cleaning of the common areas and kitchens on a regular basis. Students are responsible for keeping their bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens in a clean condition.
